Dr. Donald C. Fletcher
Donald C. Fletcher, M.D. is a medical doctor and an ophthalmologist who has completed fellowship training in both retinal diseases and in low vision rehabilitation. After completing surgical training he gave up surgery to devote his practice to patients who could not have their vision restored by any medical means, believing that this was a pressing deficiency in the American health care delivery system. For the last 20 years he has devoted himself to rehabilitation of the visually impaired and has cared for over 15,000 low vision patients, while teaching many others how to perform this work. He is credited with developing a new approach to rehabilitation of the visually impaired within America’s health care system.
He has done extensive volunteer work in professional organizations and has served as the chairman of the Low Vision Rehabilitation Committee of the American Academy of Ophthalmology and as the American Academy of Ophthalmology’s representative to the American Congress of Rehabilitation Medicine. Dr. Fletcher is a volunteer advisor to the National Eye Health Education Program and has served as a member of the National Eye Institute’s Visual Impairment and Rehabilitation Panel. He holds the Helen Keller Foundation Chair for Research and Education in Low Vision Rehabilitation. He is currently on the scientific faculty of the Smith-Kettlewell Eye Research Institute and Medical Director of the Center for Low Vision Rehabilitation at the California Pacific Medical Center in San Francisco. Dr. Fletcher has now joined the Center for Vision Rehabilitation at The National Retina Institute.
Dr. Fletcher has a special interest in medicine in the developing world and has done work in Africa, South America and Asia. He has helped to establish pioneering rehabilitation clinics in Zimbabwe, Brazil, the Philippines and China. He is a world renowned retina specialist who has been an international leader in the field of Vision Rehabilitation.
