About NRI - History

Change Font Size: SmallMediumLarge

The National Retina Institute was founded on the theory that a real world private practice can offer direct patient care as well as promote and advance knowledge of its chosen field in a more targeted and efficient manner than a university-based department.

Since 1989, when Dr. Bert M. Glaser departed his position as Professor of Ophthalmology at Johns Hopkins University to test this concept, the theory has become a proven fact. National Retina Institute doctors have now treated tens of thousands of patients, using the most cutting edge techniques including numerous types of laser, intravitreal medications and advanced microsurgical techiniques. Many of these techniques have been developed at NRI. They have also established new avenues of research, education and technical applications that have advanced the treatment of retina disease and disorders around the world.

Dr. Glaser, NRI's Founder and Executive Director, is a retinal surgeon, researcher, innovator and teacher who has been in practice over twenty-five years. He earned his medical degree at Columbia University and completed his ophthalmology residency at the Johns Hopkins School of Medicine. Prior to NRI, he served for ten years as Professor of Ophthalmology and Vitreoretinal Surgery, and as the Director of The Center for Vitreoretinal Research at The Wilmer Eye Institute of the Johns Hopkins School of Medicine.

Under his guidance, NRI has become a preeminent retina research and treatment center. Offices have grown from the Towson, Maryland (Baltimore) headquarters to those now established throughout Maryland, suburbs of Washington, D.C. and Virginia.
