About NRI - Leadership

Change Font Size: SmallMediumLarge

The physicians, scientists and staff of The National Retina Institute are recognized internationally due to their leadership in the development of new tools for the diagnosis and treatment of retinal disorders. One need not go far in the realm of retina science and patient care to find the imprint of The National Retina Institute. Doctors who have trained at NRI now populate prestigious positions in both academia and private practice.

A library of publications and peer review presentations describing new successes in retina surgery and care have been authored by physicians, scientists and staff of NRI. Physicians and fellows are granted time and encouragement to engage in basic and clinical research and to publish their findings. NRI engages a full time director of clinical trials so that new surgery related devices and treatment medications can be developed and investigated.

An example of NRI's leadership in research can be found in the exciting new field of proteomics, a large scale study of protein activity in cells, which holds the promise of detecting and treating disease in a far more advanced and effective manner. By learning the characteristics of proteins in a diseased cell, researchers are finding opportunities to improve early detection and achieve a better prognosis and patient-tailored treatment. NRI physician Dr. Geeta Davuluri, along with Dr. Glaser, is currently involved in ground breaking research of mapping the human retinal proteome, which will lead to a an increased understanding of how certain pathologies in the eye develop.

This full-service approach to the field of retina care, research and education has resulted in international recognition for NRI, with many complex cases from other cities and from other nations of the world being referred to NRI for diagnosis and treatment.
