Conditions - Macular Holes

Change Font Size: SmallMediumLarge

Prior to the innovative work of Dr. Bert Glaser, Executive Director of NRI, the occurrence of a macular hole almost uniformly resulted in a significant loss of vision. In the early 1990’s Dr. Glaser developed and published new surgical techniques that could restore vision in the majority of patients suffering from macular holes.

A macular hole is a break in the macula, which lies at the center of the retina and is responsible for that part of our vision required for images sharply defined enough for seeing in detail such as required for reading and other close work. This important central part of our vision can be severely compromised by a macular hole.

Holes can develop when the gel-like substance called the vitreous ages and shrinks, tugging and pulling away from the retina as it does. This may happen without any negative effect, but it can also pull away from the retinal surface in such a manner as to leave a hole. The hole fills with liquid and a damaging separation of the retina and macula occurs resulting in loss of central vision or distortion.

Surgical procedures for resealing macular holes now offer hope for visual improvement for those who suffer from this disorder. It is important that intervention occur in a timely manner so prompt diagnosis in crucial. The doctors at NRI are expert in the diagnosis and treatment of macular holes.

At NRI we are always working to advance the care of retinal disorders. Our doctors are involved in new research that is opening the door to even better results in the treatment of macular holes.
